Week Four

Most of the peppers and tomatoes have either blooms or fruit on them, the zucchini is close to blooming, and everything else is coming along nicely.

Week three, a little late

Everything is looking good!

Mid-Week

Here's a freshly planted "patio" tomato plant.  Let's see how this one works out.

The path between the two beds is freshly mulched; we hope it stays weed free now.  The asparagus beds were planted with some sunflower seeds today since only a couple of the asparagus are growing.

We put in a topsy-turvy tomato plant too!  This is a sweet 100 cherry tomato.

Just a picture of the beds, all growing nicely.

Week two update: Who pea'd in the garden?

We have veggies growing!
Here is one of the sugar snap pea plants with a tiny little pea pod.

And two teeny tomatoes.

Now for the rest of the updates on the boxes:

Cukes are coming up all around the base of the ring and sugar snap peas are doing well.

There are several potato plants in this picture, look for the very dark green leaves.

This bed has lots of yellow onions!  The pimiento pepper plant in the upper left is about to bloom and the tomato plant on the left is the one with the tiny tomatoes in the above picture.

The peppers and tomatoes are looking good, as is the cantaloupe!  The evil squirrels have been digging up the green onion bulbs in this bed so we have been replanting them.  The okra was planted in a set of three seedlings, but two of them were bitten off.  I put red pepper  flakes around the remaining okra to (hopefully) deter them.

Here is a closeup of the first asparagus!  It's very thin and still pretty tiny, but at least we know they are growing.  :)

this is a test of the mobile blogger.

Week One

Here is the layout of the beds as of week one, now that almost everything has been planted.

This one contains, in the back row:  tomato plants,  and a green bell pepper; middle row: cantaloupe, cherry tomato, and okra; and in the front row:  orange bell pepper (just bought, not planted yet) and green bell peppers.  On the left and right sides of the box are green onions.

This box has 8 sugar snap peas around the perimeter, and cucumber seeds at the bottom of the ring so they will climb the tower, hopefully.  The cukes are starting to peep through the soil!

This box has from back to front:  cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower, potatoes and zucchini (or squash), and garlic, potatoes, and zucchini.    The garlic and potatoes aren't up yet, but they should be pretty soon.  The zucchini or squash in the center row, right side is a volunteer from last year's crop.  It's kind of hard to see, but it is just southeast of the cauliflower, close to the side of the box.  I don't know what it will grow yet!

This box has in the back row: pimiento pepper and green bell pepper; middle row:  beefsteak tomatoes with a potato in the center of the box; and front row:  banana pepper and green bell pepper.  All around the 4 sides of this box are yellow onions.  They are already coming up!

This is the strawberry bed on the left that overwintered pretty well and the asparagus bed.  They haven't come through the soil yet, but they should soon.

Year 2

We got all of the rest of the garden put in today (Kirstin and Paula), so look for pictures to be coming soon. The seeds didn't cooperate too well, so we purchased seedlings and roots and planted those. Hope these do better. So we'll be calling this WEEK ONE, and will be dating the garden from this week forward. Hope this makes sense. Look for pictures soon!

Spring 2010-week 2

We've got our first seedling growing! It's a cucumber and, so far, none of the others have started growing but Kirstin will keep an eye out for any.

Happy gardening!

Spring 2010-week 1

Well, it's finally starting to warm up and Kirstin is on Spring Break so we figured it's time to start planting! Yesterday, Kirstin planted some asparagus in one of our short beds and hopefully they'll grow and we can get some asparagus. Today, Kirstin started some seeds inside and in about 2-4 weeks the seedlings will be able to transplant into the garden beds. She planted leaf lettuce, iceberg lettuce, cucumber, cantaloupe, straight-neck squash, butternut squash, and ancho peppers. Tomorrow morning/afternoon, she will be planting yellow garden beans, green garden beans, sugar snap peas, radishes and beets. The beds all need to be tilled (because they are as hard as a rock!) and will get some new soil added to the beds.

These are the seeds that Kirstin used

Until next week, happy gardening!
